DELTA TO FURTHER CUT CAPACITY
(source: BTNonline)
Delta Air Lines CEO Richard Anderson and President Edward Bastian in a memo released December 2, 2008, said the carrier, combined with its recently acquired Northwest Airlines subsidiary, would further reduce systemwide capacity by up to 8% in 2009. Delta said the action "comes as a result of the global economic recession."
Delta said domestic capacity next year would be down by between 8% and 10%, while international capacity will be pulled down by 3% to 5%. The company did not provide details on the routes affected.
US AIRWAYS RESTORES BONUS MILES
(source: Charlotte Observer)
Following an outcry from frequent fliers, US Airways has brought back mileage-award perks for regular customers – a rare reversal in this era of more fees and fewer benefits for travelers. Even better for road warriors: The changes will be retroactive.
No other major airlines have eliminated bonus miles, and US Airways has been roundly criticized for the cuts in frequent-flier awards. With many customers pledging to switch airlines, US Airways reversed course last week.
"Our Dividend Miles Program members are extremely important to us,” said Andrew Nocella, senior vice president for marketing and planning, in a statement, “and these changes reflect our continued commitment to delivering the best product with the most value to our customers."
HOTELS SEEK MIX BETWEEN HOSPITALITY, SECURITY
(source: USA Today)
The situation in Mumbai has revealed the delicate balance that large international hotels face, acting as a public gathering place for a sophisticated business clientele without sacrificing security. New discussions have emerged about the proper level of security that should be in place at hotels frequented by business travelers.
"The industry has specific, unique challenges," says Todd Brown, executive director of Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), a federal advisory panel that works with the State Department for global security and safety issues. "They're inviting people in and they want to be hospitable, but some are also operating in an environment that is threatening."
The Association of Corporate Travel Executives on Monday issued a list of security practices that it will urge hotels to implement, including: providing blueprints or other detailed hotel information to police and fire officials; installing secondary communications, such as PA systems, to inform guests about fires or emergencies; training staff more efficiently in evacuating guests; and surveillance systems.
