WEATHER CAUSES TRAVEL DELAYS IN THE U.K.
(source: Bloomberg.com)
The U.K.’s railways and airports suffered a third day of delays from the worst winter storm since 1991. Some rail services were disrupted and flights canceled at Scottish airports.
South West Trains and Southeastern Trains may be delayed, diverted or canceled. First Great Western Trains aren’t running between London Paddington and Greenford, west of London and some other services were altered or halted. Eurostar services between the U.K and continental Europe were operating with disruptions today and some services were canceled, according to an e-mailed statement from the company.
Heathrow was open and both runways were in use at the London airport, Europe’s busiest, operator BAA Airports Ltd. said in a statement. The operator said it is working with airlines to minimize disruption and operate a full schedule Wednesday, February 4. On February 3, airlines scrapped 118 flights, BAA said.
London’s Gatwick airport was running a “near-full” service with a small number of flight cancellations and Stansted was expected to operate normally, BAA said. Flights to and from Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh may be delayed or canceled, BAA said.
AMERICAN LIMITS PASSENGERS, ORDERS ADDITIONAL LIFE RAFTS
(source: USA Today)
American Airlines is limiting the number of passengers on some planes while it orders additional life rafts needed in case of a water landing like the one made this month on the Hudson River by a US Airways jet. American will allow no more than 228 people including passengers and crew on its Boeing 767-300 aircraft, which normally holds 236 people including a crew of 11, spokesman Tim Wagner said Wednesday.
American is taking the step to make sure it complies with Federal Aviation Administration rules on raft capacity, Wagner said. FAA rules require aircraft to have enough room on life rafts to accommodate everyone on board, including children seated on their parents' laps and to plan as if one raft fails to work.
LUFTHANSA UNVEILS PREMIUM LOUNGE AT JFK
(source: Lufthansa)
Lufthansa has officially unveiled its new lounge at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The facility encompasses nearly 16,000 square feet, about twice the size of the airline’s original JFK lounge and features three levels, each dedicated to one of Lufthansa’s premium passenger segments – Business Class, Senator and First Class/HON Circle. The $10 million upgrade is part of Lufthansa’s $200 million lounge renovation program.
The First Class/HON Circle lounge area, located on the third level, is Lufthansa’s first such facility outside the airline’s three European hubs in Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich. Guests can choose to relax in the First Class area or enjoy a pre-flight dinner in the separate dining room. First Class guests also have access to premium-quality shower amenities.
The Senator Lounge, located on the second level, features parquet flooring, bistro and counter dining options. The Business Class Lounge is located on the main level. The spacious area accommodates up to 171 passengers or about 75 percent more than the original lounge.
