AIRLINES SEE SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT IN APRIL

U.S. airlines, which saw much of their high-fare business traffic evaporate this winter, may finally be coming out of their tailspin.
Reports on passenger volume and revenue from several carriers for April indicate that the steep fare discounts airlines have offered to fill coach seats are partially offsetting a big loss in business- and first-class fares.
Continental Airlines (CAL), the first carrier to report monthly traffic and the only one to provide estimates of what average passengers actually pay to fly, says April was the best month so far this year. The country's fifth-largest airline saw traffic, measured in passenger miles flown, down from a year ago. But the April drop was only 3.8% from April 2008. March's drop was 9.7% year over year.
Others saw improvements, too. American (AMR) says traffic was down 4.7% in April compared with April last year, less than the March falloff of 10.9% year over year. Discount airline AirTran (AAI) says its traffic fell only 0.3% in April vs. April 2008, while March traffic was down 7.2% year over year. AirTran filled 80.4% of its seats last month.
More encouraging was Continental's estimated revenue per available seat mile, or how much the carrier was paid per unit of capacity. It was down by as much as 13.5% compared with April 2008. While not good, that's better than the 19.6% drop it recorded in March.
AIRLINE GROUP: ONLY MEXICO HIT HARD BY SWINE FLU

The International Air Transport Association says the outbreak of swine flu seems only to have affected airline traffic to and from Mexico.
Association CEO Giovanni Bisignani says, "We haven't seen any relevant impact which could compare with SARS," the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome outbreak in Asia in 2003 that reduced world air traffic by 20%.
Speaking in Madrid on Tuesday, Bisignani said, "What we have seen in these two weeks is a noticeable slowdown in traffic to and from Mexico."
CHINESE VISA REQUIREMENTS ALERT

The Chinese authorities in various cities across the United States have changed the visa processing timeframe to roughly six business days. Expedited processing is temporarily not available. Effective immediately, most consulates will also require a separate declaration form outlining the countries that the traveler has visited within the past two weeks. This declaration form will be included with the visa application and requirements available through CIBT.
