REAL ID Deadline Extended to May 7, 2025

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that the REAL ID deadline will now be May 7, 2025. The deadline was previously May 3, 2023, for US travelers 18 years of age or older to secure a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license for domestic air travel.

The lingering impacts of COVID-19 have impeded REAL ID progress over the past two years, and the extension will give states additional time to ensure their residents have driver’s licenses and identification cards that meet the security standards established by the REAL ID Act.

“DHS continues to work closely with US states, the District of Columbia, and the US territories to meet REAL ID requirements,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. “This extension will give states needed time to ensure their residents can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card. DHS will also use this time to implement innovations to make the process more efficient and accessible. We will continue to ensure that the American public can travel safely.”
